Pat Waters "Right Where I Belong" Album Review

Tuesday, May 02, 2006

Pat Waters - Right Where I Belong from Jennifer Webb

Guide Rating - Five out of Five Stars
The Bottom Line
This is an album for fans of pure, traditional, country music. In my opinion, Pat Waters could rank right up there with greats like Alan Jackson and George Strait if given the chance and promoted as much as other mainstream artists. There's a larger audience waiting out there for Pat and I wish him luck getting in touch with them.

Pros "Bad Day Of Fishing" "Badly Bent" "Right Where I Belong"
Cons None.
Description Thirteen tracks. Very traditional sound. Produced by Eddie Gore and Pat Waters.
Guide Review - Pat Waters - Right Where I Belong I've heard Pat Waters many times before on the radio but for some reason I never purchased one of his albums. Now I know what I've been missing. His music is high quality and is very traditional country sounding. You can tell by listening to his music that he grew up with really good influences (Merle Haggard, George Strait, Mel Street). I'm sure I'll be listening to this one for quite a long time. "That Ole Blacktop" is about a man who tipped his hat and said "Adios" when his wife decided to leave him. The man wishes her well and adds that when her greener pasture turns blue she could always come back home. "Wasted" was one of my favorite songs on Jamie Richard's 'Between These Lines' album and I'm glad there is another artist's version to enjoy. "The Company I Keep" is about a guy who knows his friends are rowdy and crazy but he knows they are the best people. "Is That Such A Foolish Thing" is a slow song about a man who wants to know if happiness is achievable. there's no such thing as a "Bad Day Of Fishing" in the next song. "If you get no action you can just sit back and take in the great outdoors." "Badly Bent" is one of those songs where nothing seems to be going right for the man. He needs to "squeak by 'til the first." Title track, "Right Where I Belong," is the perfect honky-tonking closer to the album.

CD Review - PAT WATERS - Right Where I Belong (13 Selections – Playing Time 45:05)
Right Where I Belong is Pat Waters’ second album, and the Texan creates quite an impact with this 13-song set, which features the lead single, Badly Bent, a “woe is me” lament that most every country music fan will relate to (especially the day before payday). Pat Waters has a vocal delivery that is not unlike Alan Jackson (nice company), but unique enough to avoid direct comparison. He is also handed a bunch of really strong tunes (he doesn’t have a hand in writing any of them – shades of George Strait); and scores big points with tunes like Here (the Alan Jackson touch is most prominent on this one); the title track message song Right Where I Belong and the Tex-Mex flavored Texas Tears And Mexican Beer. The Josh Turner-penned Bad Day Of Fishing is something of a Brad Paisley rip-off, but it also comes off as a key track on the album. There are several ‘covers’. Three songs, Tough, Love You Back To Texas and Wasted, all were written by fellow-Texan Jamie Richards and included on his 2004 Between These Lines album; while That Ole Blacktop was previously heard on Kelsey DiMarco’s debut set; and Sorry ‘Bout The Mess, was first heard on a recent album by The Well Hungarians. Likely none of these ever received heavy radio exposure so Pat Waters’ versions will feel relatively new. There is a myriad of ‘bubbling under’ new artists, especially on the Texas music scene, who keep coming up with outstanding albums, many of which never get the light of day on country radio. Pat Waters may defy the odds with this album, and become the “breakthrough” artist of the year !!

Pat Waters CD Review JB Cloud MD/PD KBCY Abilene, Tx
I get tons of CDs in the mail every week and every now and then I come across one that makes me smile. I love Country music, Texas and Texas Country and the new CD from Pat Waters has taken what I love and put it all out there. Pats CD is chocked full of Country and Texas music that is Daytime Friendly for Country Radio stations across the state and for people looking for the best bang for their buck when shopping for tunes and concerts. One of the things I like about Pat Waters and this project is the amount of stories that are told through song. The first song, That Old Blacktop, paints the picture we've all seen about a girl who leaves for greener pastures but Pat reminds her and you and that the road she's on will not only take her down the road but it'll also bring her back. Pat covers Jamie Richards Wasted on Track ..2. Here, found in the 3rd slot reflects on different jobs all over the country while at the same time being glad for the moment when he's with his woman. All of Pat's buddies get saluted on The Company I Keep. Pat tells some wild stories but reminds us that true buddies will not only get wild, they'll also watch your back. You can slow 2-step to Is That Such A Foolish Thing all night long, a song that has a guy writing a love letter to his girl and all he has on the paper so far are the words I Love You. My favorite song on the CD is ..6, Sorry About The Mess. When looking for a boyfriend or girlfriend, we all worry about our messy past. Like a messy house, a messy life calls for an apology right up front. Great job, Pat. The rest of the CD takes you up and down on the Country Music Express back to the days of the Street Dance in small Texas Towns. You can stomp your feet and raise a glass with Texas Tears & Mexican Beer. Hardcore fisherman will love Pat's Bad Day To Fish and if you try hard enough, no matter how far your woman has traveled you might just Love Her Back To Texas. Badly Bent, also known as JBs Song (in my life), is an optimistic and fun look at those who live paycheck to paycheck. And, one of the most heartfelt songs on the CD, Tough, is the story of a boy who leaves his single mom to become a man in a world of shut doors, falls and disappointment. But instead of crying about it, the boy grows up and keeps trying. If you are looking for Country music in Texas that reminds you of good love, bad love, beer, buddies and mom then check out the new CD from Pat Waters.

Pat Waters has a no-frills, straight-forward approach to the honky-tonk style, deeply rooted into the "country soul." Simply put, he has a "Back to the Basics" country style.

REVIEW: Pat Waters: I Knew

Now this is my kind of music.

Pat Waters and his band, Under the Influence, rip out with some fine, pure, and real Texas honky-tonk on their debut disc, "I Knew," in the style that I just love. I couldn't help but like this fellow, right from the first few bars of the opening track, "Country As A City Girl Can Be." not only just my style, but kinda talks to me since I've been stuck living in a city since I was 10 years old.

Waters does an impressive mix of classics as well as originals; although apparently not a songwriter himself, Waters shows a real knack for choosing songs that suit his warm Texas tenor and he sings them all with style. His covers of "Green Snakes on the Ceiling," "Song on the Jukebox," and "Wine Me Up" are wonderful; and I really liked his upbeat version of the classic "Hello Walls." Add to that such great new songs as "Genuine Leather," the first single and title track, "I Knew," and "Wouldn't Hurt To Try," and Waters has presented here a real-deal disc that never fails to please from start to finish.

Waters' vocals are reminiscent of a number of Texas singers, but his style is genuine, and his Under The Influence band is top-notch, consisting of Ricky Pack (Clay Walker, Ty Herndon, Janie Frickie, Red Stegall) on lead guitar, Ted Solesky on steel, Chris Smith on drums, Mark Peterson on keys and background vocals, and Kerry Watts (Janie Fricke) on bass. They make a danged fine sound together.

Waters hails from, you guessed it, Texas (Bridgeport, to be exact), and was the 2002 Terry Award Male Vocalist of the Year. He's paid his dues opening for folks like Willie Nelson, Loretta Lynn, Alan Jackson, and a score or more of others. With his real sound and genuine Texas attitude, he should be with us for a good long while, and hopefully always giving us honky-tonk music this good.

Pat Waters is a great entertainer, as evidenced by his rollicking, high energy show. He is a symbol of Pure Honky-Tonk, with a repertoire of danceable songs with wry lyrics.
